Control Valves: BUICK: Replacement
Disconnect thermal limiter and discharge system. Clean all dirt and grease from exterior surface of VIR. With system completely discharged, loosen evaporator tube connection at VIR inlet connector shell assembly. Loosen and remove all screws that mount inlet connector shell to VIR housing. Remove shell assembly carefully to avoid scratching sealing surfaces. Place shell in a safe place, keeping this assembly free from possible nicks and scratches is most important. Discard "O"-rings. Clean top area of valve housing, blow away any loose dirt that was dislodged when removing shell. Loosen one valve capsule retaining screw and washer assembly three turns. Remove other screw entirely. Insert tool J 24182-1 (or equivalent) into baffle of POA valve capsule, so that step edge of the tool clears edge of capsule. Keep tool firmly engaged in baffle and press down on tool handle to free capsule from cavity.
2) When POA capsule lifts free, remove tool, retaining screw and washer assembly, and POA valve. Discard "O"-ring. Wipe POA valve cavity and mounting flange recess with a clean lint free cloth. Lubricate new POA valve capsule and "O"-ring with clean refrigeration oil, install new "O"-ring on capsule and carefully install new valve in cavity. Press valve into place by hand. Reinstall valve retaining screw and washer assemblies and tighten to 5-7 Ft. Lbs. Clean entire surface of inlet connector shell. Inspect "O"-ring sealing area of flange for any scratches that could result in a leak. Lubricate new inlet connector shell-to-valve housing "O"-ring and place "O"-ring in groove on valve housing. Carefully position inlet connector shell on valve housing and install mounting screws. Tighten mounting screws to 5-7 Ft. Lbs.
