RECALL CAMPAIGN 03V-160: REPLACE GENERAL MODULE

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.
Under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966, as amended, if there is a recall campaign, dealers must assure that all new vehicles and new items of replacement equipment are free of safety defects and comply with all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards at the time of delivery to the consumer. This means that dealers may not deliver new motor vehicles or new items of replacement equipment to consumers unless the safety defect or noncompliance has been remedied before delivery.

MODEL
E46 (3 Series) - Except Convertible
SITUATION
It is possible, under certain sporadic conditions, that the window lifting anti-pinching feature might not function properly, and pinching may be possible.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This recall involves E46 (3 Series) vehicles (except convertibles), which were produced between 12 August 2002 and 18 November 2002.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this recall, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

CORRECTION
Using the DISPlus/GT1, check the production date of the General Module, and replace if necessary.
PROCEDURE
When customer appointment is scheduled, the customer must be asked to bring all remote keys on the day of appointment
- Connect a battery charger to the vehicle
- Connect a DISPlus/GT1 to the vehicle and turn on the ignition (KL-15).
- 3 After automatic vehicle identification, select "ZKE Central Body Electronics" in the equipment list. Answer the question "Is it necessary to perform the brief test for the basic module?" with "Yes".
- Select Control Unit Functions
- Select "ZKE General Module 5" / Identification
- Read off the "BMW part number", and "Date of manufacture, CW"
- If the part number is 6 924 250 and the date of manufacture is 37 or earlier, the General Module must be replaced - continue with step 8.
- For part numbers / dates falling outside this range, no further work is necessary.
- Select Coding and Programming / Car Memory, and Print out "Car and Key Memory" settings.
- Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery
- Open the glove box and remove the pin from the retaining strap on the right side, and the pin from the damper on the left side.
Remove the (6) screws retaining the glove box, and remove the glove box complete.
- Replace the General Module, located in the electrical carrier behind the glove box.
- Reinstall the glove box, and reconnect the battery
- Switch on the ignition, and using the DISPlus/GT1, select Coding/Programming.
- Select "ZCS/FA Coding / "E46" / "Recoding" / "GM (ZKE V) and follow the on-screen prompts to complete the coding process.
- Use either Car Memory and/or Key memory, reset and store the "Car and Key Memory" functions that were previously printed.
- Reinitialize all remote keys (refer to TRI B66 75 00 )

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This recall has been assigned code number 361. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-215) and:
- emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
- punch out code number 361 printed on the label and,
- affix the label to the B pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
WARRANTY INFORMATION
Reimbursement for this campaign will be by campaign entry.

REQUESTS FOR CUSTOMER REIMBURSEMENT OF PRIOR WORK
To Complete the Recall
A customer is eligible to request reimbursement of prior work performed according to the guidelines detailed the "Tread Act Customer Reimbursement Plan" attached to the customer letter. You will need to inspect the vehicle. If you determine, after this inspection, that the prior work meets all of the requirements for the completion of this recall, use work package # 1. If the prior work did not meet all requirements, or if the vehicle still requires updating, perform the work now and use work package # 2.
To Reimburse the Customer
The amount to be reimbursed to the customer should be shown as a separate line on the same invoice as the recall. The closest applicable defect code from KSD should be used with clear comments indicating that this is customer reimbursement for prior work according to the provisions of the "Tread Act Reimbursement Plan". Attach a copy of the customer's original repair invoice as documentation to support his reimbursement claim.
