SUBJECT

Service Interval Coding Limits (SIA III) for 2000 Model Year Vehicles

SITUATION

The SIA III method of calculating service intervals has been progressively introduced and now applies to all BMW models except the M Roadster and Coupe. Unlike SIA II, which calculates service intervals based on the parameters of engine speed, engine temperature and distance traveled, SIA III calculates service intervals based on fuel used.

PROCEDURE

Using ISTA (Integrated Service Technical Application), the SIA data coded into a vehicle (the "Coded Inspection Limit" [in gallons]) can be printed and attached to the repair order. This is required in cases when the instrument cluster indicates that scheduled maintenance is required, but the vehicle has lower than expected mileage. The most likely cause is either an aggressive driving style or that the vehicle is used in heavy city traffic. In a small number of cases, it may be that the SIA data was incorrectly coded. In this case, the instrument cluster must be recoded to correct the service interval coding limit coded into the vehicle.

The display of SIA data in ISTA also shows "Stored Consumption". "Stored Consumption" (in gallons) shows the amount of fuel consumed in the "Coded inspection limit" (in gallons). When the two numbers become equal, the instrument cluster indicates that service is required. When a "Service reset" is performed, "Stored Consumption" is reset to zero.

To access the vehicle SIA data, use ISTA and follow the vehicle selection below:
