CONDITION

The customer states the Audi Drive Select button on the steering wheel does not function. When pressed, there is no noticeable change in the Drive Select profile shown in the virtual cockpit, and the customer does not notice any change to the vehicle's driving characteristics (exhaust note and powertrain drive mode do not change). The vehicle is a 2017 R8 V10 without the plus package (V10 540HP).

TECHNICAL BACKGROUND

There are three different scenarios that the customer can experience which would warrant this above concern.

First Scenario: Upon the first press of the Audi Drive Select button, the current driver profile is shown (Figure 1). There is no change to the current setting until a second press of the button. If the second press is not performed within three seconds of the first press of the button, then the current profile will be shown again and no change will be made. The customer must press the button twice within three seconds to allow the selection of a new driver profile. The MMI menu for Drive Select Profiles does not show when the button is pressed (Figure 3). This is a normal condition.

Second Scenario:  When the vehicle is in the backup camera mode, there is no change shown in the virtual cockpit while the camera image is visible. However, the profile change happens in the background (Figure 2). This is a normal condition.

G11751232

Third Scenario:  When the customer presses the drive select button multiple times (within three seconds of each press) immediately after starting the engine, and after allowing the virtual cockpit to initialize, there is no visible change to the driver profile after each button press. There is a known software concern which can prevent the button from functioning normally after the vehicle is started following a sleep cycle. If the customer is experiencing this concern, then proceed to the Service section.

To overcome this issue listed in scenario three, the driver can use the MMI controls to navigate to the Audi Drive Select menu manually (Listed under Vehicle Settings - Figure 3), and after viewing this MMI menu, the Drive Select steering wheel button will begin to function normally only during the current ignition cycle. Once the vehicle is allowed to sleep, the concern is repeated again on the subsequent ignition cycle (Figure 3).

PRODUCTION SOLUTION

Improved software for the vehicle electrical system control module, J519 (address word 0009).

SERVICE

Please inform the customer of the first two "normal" scenarios listed in the Technical Background  . Ensure that the customer understands the two normal conditions and has the correct expectations. If the customer is experiencing the condition listed in scenario three as mentioned above, then proceed with the service repair below.

Required equipment:

Time to complete update:

Update the operating software of the vehicle electrical system control module, J519 (address word 0009) with the SVM. To access SVM, within ODIS start GFF >> Flash >> Start Flashing >> SVM code input  .

VEHICLE MODEL AND OLD SW P/N SPECIFICATION

Model Old SW P/N Old SW Ver. New SW P/N New SW Ver. SVM Code
2017 R8 4H0907063FK * 4H0907063HK 0725 09A031

Test the updated software:

  1. Disconnect the ODIS tester.
  2. Close all doors and windows and lock the car.
  3. Allow the car to sit for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Once the CAN bus system is asleep, unlock the car and start the engine.
  5. Wait 10-15 seconds to allow the virtual cockpit to initialize, then press the Audi Drive Select button twice on the steering wheel.
  6. Verify the selected profile has changed in the virtual cockpit. This will be shown under the gear selection icon in the small or large gauge cluster view. There will be no large MMI menu, as seen in the vehicle settings menu, shown during this change. This is a normal condition.
  7. If the customer wants to see the larger selection menu as seen in the vehicle settings menu, then inform the customer they must navigate to this setting manually, and then the menu will show during all subsequent presses of the Drive Select button during that ignition cycle.
