Selector Mechanism, Removing And Installing: Removing
-- Remove the selector lever handle with the selector lever boot, refer to SELECTOR LEVER HANDLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Unclip the center console insert -1- carefully upward -arrows-.
-- Disconnect the connector to the Selector Lever Transmission Range Position Display Unit -Y26- and remove the center console insert -1-.
-- Remove the front center console storage compartment, refer to Front Center Console Storage Compartment, Removing And Installing .
-- If equipped remove the bracket with the Access/Start System Antenna 1 in Vehicle Interior -R138- from the front selector mechanism stud bolts, refer to Access/Start System Antenna 1 in Vehicle Interior -R138-, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- If equipped remove the noise insulation from the selector mechanism.
-- Separate the electrical connector -1- from the function unit of the selector mechanism to the vehicle wire set.
Ignore item -2-.
-- Disconnect the connector -3- on the Mass Airflow Sensor -G70-.
-- Remove the hose -4-.
-- Loosen the hose clamp -2- and remove the air guide hose.
-- Remove the bolts -1 and 5- and remove the air filter housing.
-- Remove the battery and the battery tray -1-, refer to BATTERY TRAY, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, VERSION 1 or BATTERY TRAY, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, VERSION 2 , also see OVERVIEW - BATTERY, BATTERY IN LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT .
Risk of burning due to hot steam and hot coolant.
- When engine is warm, the cooling system is under pressure.
- Reduce pressure by cover coolant expansion tank cap with cloths and carefully opening.
To catch escaping coolant, place a cloth on the ATF cooler and the transmission.
-- Clamp off the coolant hoses to the ATF cooler using Hose Clamps - Up To 25mm:3094 and remove, to do this loosen the hose clamps -arrows-.
-- Seal the open lines and connections with clean plugs from the Engine Bung Set: VAS6122 .
-- Remove the ATF cooler -1- from the ATF cooler bracket -2- -arrows-.
The ATF lines remain installed on the ATF cooler.
The ATF cooler remains on the transmission.
-- Remove the bracket -2- for the ATF cooler, refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID BRACKET, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Carefully release the selector lever cable from the transmission -1 arrows- by hand and pull it out of the cable bracket in the direction of the -arrow 2-.
Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.
Do not use pliers because the tabs on the cable mounting bracket could break off.
-- Pry the selector lever cable -1- off the selector lever -3-, for example, using a wrench -2-.
-- Remove the selector lever cable -1- from the bracket -2- on the transmission.
-- Lift the vehicle.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- from exhaust system bracket on the subframe.
-- Remove the nuts -arrows- and slide the clamping sleeve to the back.
There is a danger of causing damage to the decoupling element.
- Do not bend the decoupling element in the front exhaust pipe more than 10°.
-- Tie up the front exhaust pipe to the left side of the vehicle.
-- Remove the rear section of the exhaust system, refer to OVERVIEW - MUFFLER (2.0L 4V TFSI Engine; EA 888 Generation II, As of 01.2018), OVERVIEW - MUFFLER (2.0L 4V TFSI Engine; EA 888 Generation III, As of 12.2017), or OVERVIEW - MUFFLER (2.0L 4V TFSI Engine; EA 888 Generation II, As of 09.2016) .
AWD Vehicles
-- Remove the heat shield from underneath the driveshaft, refer to Overview - Heat Shield .
-- Remove the driveshaft, refer to DRIVESHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
For All Vehicles
-- Remove the heat shield from the underbody and push rearward until the selector mechanism is accessible, refer to Molding/Trim/Extensions/Trim Panels .
-- Remove the nuts -arrows- in the vehicle interior.
-- Remove the selector lever function unit from below with the selector lever cable.
