Glow Plug, Removing And Installing: Removing
-- Remove the engine cover. Refer to ENGINE COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Risk of damaging the support sleeve by lifting.
- Do not press the Wheel Bolt Cap Pliers :3314 together too firmly to remove the glow plug connector.
-- Open the wiring harness clips and remove the connectors from the glow plugs as follows.
-- Position the Wheel Bolt Cap Pliers :3314 with the groove -arrow A- on the collar of the protective sleeve -arrow B-, as shown.
-- Remove the glow plug connector carefully from the glow plugs.
-- Clean the glow plug duct in the cylinder head. Dirt must not enter the cylinder.
Example for cleaning:
- Extract large contaminants with a vacuum cleaner.
- Spray a brake cleaner or a suitable cleaner into the glow plug shaft, let it work and then use compressed air to remove it.
- Then clean the glow plug duct with a cloth coated with oil.
Risk of injury due to flying soot particles.
Irritation and injury to skin and eyes possible.
- Wear protective eyewear.
- Wear safety gloves.
-- Loosen the glow plugs with the tool and remove by hand:
Glow plug versions. Refer to Figure.
For glow plugs without combustion chamber pressure sensors:
Loosen the glow plugs using the Glow Plug Socket :3220 and remove by hand.
For glow plugs with combustion chamber pressure sensors:
Loosen the glow plugs using the Glow Plug Socket :VAS 6454 and remove them by hand.
The glow plugs can only be loosened to a loosening-angle of about 90°, after which the turning my be stopped due to a "tendency of seize".
This "tendency of seize" is caused by dirt particles like sand etc., which find their way into the first threads due to the different thermal expansions (steel) and the cylinder head (aluminum).
-- Loosen the glow plug until you can feel it is difficult to move, then tighten it again. Afterwards, loosen it again until you can feel it is difficult to move.
- Repeat these periodic left/right turns to the point in which it is difficult to move until the glow plug is removed.
-- Carefully remove the glow plugs by hand without tilting using the Assembly Tool :T40428 .
