Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) Level, Checking
Special Tools And Workshop Equipment Required
- Vehicle Diagnostic Tester
- Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit SMN372500
- Original 1 liter fluid container.
- Protective eyewear
- Acid-resistant safety gloves
Test Conditions
- The transmission must not be in the emergency running
- Move the vehicle onto a 4-column workshop hoist or over a work pit so it is completely level.
- Transmission in "P".
- The parking brake button should be activated to close the electro-mechanical parking brake.
- Exhaust hose/-hoses of an exhaust extraction system connected.
- The A/C and the heater are off.
- Vehicle Diagnostic Tester is connected.
- At the beginning of the test the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) temperature should not be higher than 30 °C - 35 °C (86 °F - 95 °F), because the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) temperature quickly raises, and a correct oil level is be determines at a temperature of 35 °C to 45 °C (95 °F - 113 °F) (hot climate countries maximum 50 °C (122 °F)).
Danger of causing damage to the transmission.
- Use only the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) made for the 0BK automatic transmission, which is available as a replacement part. Allocation.
- Using other fluids can cause malfunctions or transmission failure.
- The Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) filler adapter must be clean. Do not mix the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) with any other Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) types.
- Engine must not be started if only a small amount or no Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) is in the transmission after repair work or after significant Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) loss.
Procedure
-- Select the following menu options under Functions/Component selection in Guided Fault Finding on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester:
- Drivetrain
- 0BL-Transmission
- 01-OBD-capable systems
- 02-transmission electronics
- 02-Transmission electronics, functions
- 02-Measured values
-- Select transmission fluid temperature from the list.
-- Check the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) temperature.
Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) Level, Checking
-- Remove the rear noise insulation -2-. Refer to NOISE INSULATION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Start the engine in "P".
Start the engine, when all required aids are prepared because the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) temperature quickly rises, and because of this the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) level test cannot be performed.
-- While depressing the brake pedal and with the vehicle idling, shift through all the selector lever positions "P", "R", "N", "D/S" leaving each position engaged for at least 10 seconds.
-- Move the selector lever to "P".
-- Run the engine at idle.
-- Place the Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit SMN372500 under the transmission.
Danger of eye injury.
- Wear protective eyewear.
-- When the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) reaches 35 °C (95 °F), remove the plug -arrow A- and drain any excess Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF).
- The Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) level is OK when a temperature of 35 °C to 45 °C (95 °F - 113 °F) (hot climate countries maximum 50 °C (122 °F)) a small amount of fluid drips out at the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) check and fill hole -arrow A-.(this is normal as the fluid expands as it heats up).
- If no Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) drip out, fill the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF). AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID (ATF), DRAINING AND FILLING
Fill some Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) at a temperature of 40 °C (40 °F) to prevent that the test must be repeated with the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) level to low, cooling the transmission to the test temperature is a requirement.
The Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) check and fill hole must be sealed off again before the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) reaches 45°C (113 °F) (50 °C (122 °F) maximum for hot climate countries).
Replace the plug for the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) check and fill hole.
It is possible to overfill the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) if the level is checked when the temperature is too low.
It is possible to underfill the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) if the level is checked when the temperature is too high.
Overfilling or underfilling will influence the function of the transmission.
-- Tighten the new plug for the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) check and fill hole. The Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) level test is now completed.
