Steering column, removing and installing: Installing: Notes

Install in reverse order.

Pay particular attention to the following on installation:

New replacement steering columns feature a transportation safeguard.

This transport safeguard must be removed after installing the steering column in the vehicle.

Install steering column and bolts -1- but do not tighten.

Install steering column joint on the power steering gear and screw in bolt (arrow).

Ensure stress-free alignment of steering column with respect to steering gear pinion.
Tighten steering column/retaining plate bolts, see STEERING COLUMN , Item 5.
Tighten bolt for joint at power steering. See POWER STEERING GEAR, ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW , Item 3.
Remove transport safeguard and assembly aid.

For vehicles with automatic transmission engage locking cable:

Switch ignition key to position -B- "Ignition ON" to engage locking cable.
Place selector lever in park position.
Insert locking cable -2- in ignition lock housing. Make sure locking bracket -1- engages.
