CONDITION

MIL on. DTC P0441 in Engine Control Module (J220).

No effect on driveability.

TECHNICAL BACKGROUND

New ECM software has been developed to prevent inadvertent activation of DTC P0441 during cold weather months.

NOTE: Any Update Programming procedure (flash) may overwrite any tuned ECM or TCM programming. A tuned ECM or TCM is described as any ECM or TCM altered so as to perform outside the normal parameters and specifications approved by Audi of America, Inc.

CURRENT TUNED ECM OR TCM REQUIREMENTS

If you encounter a vehicle with a tuned ECM or TCM, your dealership must do the following before performing any procedure that updates ECM or TCM programming:

Notify the owner that their ECM or TCM was found to have been tuned.
Notify the owner any damage caused by the tuning of the ECM or TCM (including any adverse emissions consequences) will not be covered by Audi of America, Inc. warranties.
Obtain the owner's written consent (see attached Control Module Tuning form) for any requested repair under warranty or outside warranty that requires flashing, which will automatically overwrite the tuned program.

SERVICE

Check EVAP Purge Valve and Update SW.

Remove and discard the screen from the inlet side of the EVAP Purge Valve -N80, using a 4mm thread tap and T-handle. The EVAP Purge Valve does not need to be removed from vehicle for the inlet screen removal.

Before starting Updating programming of the ECM the operation of the EVAP Purge Valve -N80 must be tested to insure proper operation after the inlet screen is removed. In the Tester select - Vehicle Self Diagnosis - Basic Setting 006 - MVB 70 to run the EVAP purge Valve short trip test.
If the EVAP Purge Valve passes the short trip test, continue with Update Programming. Do not replace the EVAP Purge Valve.
If the EVAP Purge Valve fails the short trip test after the inlet screen is removed, continue to diagnose the condition and perform necessary repairs with the use of Guided Fault Finding and the Repair Manual. These additional repairs are not covered by this Technical Service Bulletin.
Updated Programming of the ECM is not allowed if the short trip test does not pass after the inlet screen is removed.
Ensure the Control Module Tuning form has been filled out by the owner.
Always use the 6017B K Line Adapter to ensure communication to all modules.
NOTE: Do not use a 6017 or 6017A while flashing. Doing so may result in complete control module failure.
