Engine Lubrication System Symptom Troubleshooting Index

Symptom  Diagnostic procedure  Also check for 
Excessive engine oil consumption
  1. Check for oil leaks.
  2. Check for worn valve guide (s); - Refer to: Valve Stem-to-Guide Clearance Inspection (V6), or Valve Stem-to-Guide Clearance Inspection (L4), or Valve Stem-to-Guide Clearance Inspection (L4) (2018) or worn valve seal (s) - Refer to: Valve, Spring, and Valve Seal Removal and Installation (V6), or Valve, Spring, and Valve Seal Removal and Installation (L4) .
  3. Check for a damaged or worn piston ring (s) - Refer to: Piston, Ring, Pin, and Connecting Rod Removal and Installation (V6), or Piston, Ring, Pin, and Connecting Rod Removal and Installation (L4) .
  4. Check for damaged or worn engine internal parts (cylinder wall, pistons, etc.) - Refer to: Block and Piston Inspection (V6), or Block and Piston Inspection (L4) .
Check the maintenance records as engine oil that is worn out burns off at a higher rate
Low oil pressure indicator does not come on with the vehicle in the ON mode Do the symptom troubleshooting for Low oil pressure indicator does not come on with the vehicle in the ON mode - Refer to: Engine Lubrication System Symptom Troubleshooting - Low oil pressure indicator does not come on with the vehicle in the ON mode (V6),  or Engine Lubrication System Symptom Troubleshooting - Low oil pressure indicator does not come on with the vehicle in the ON mode (L4) . An open in the wire between the PCM and the rocker arm oil pressure sensor
Low oil pressure indicator stays on
  1. Check the engine oil level - Refer to: Engine Oil Level Check (V6),  or Engine Oil Level Check (L4) .
  2. Do the symptom troubleshooting for Low oil pressure indicator stays on - Refer to: Engine Lubrication System Symptom Troubleshooting - Low oil pressure indicator stays on (V6),  or Engine Lubrication System Symptom Troubleshooting - Low oil pressure indicator stays on (L4) .
A wire shorted to ground between the PCM and the rocker arm oil pressure sensor
