DTC P0010: VTC Oil Control Solenoid Valve Malfunction (L4)

NOTE:  Before you troubleshoot, review the general troubleshooting information - Refer to: How to Troubleshoot the Fuel and Emissions Systems (L4), or How to Troubleshoot the Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT), or How to Troubleshoot the Brake Booster Pressure Monitoring System (With Auto Idle Stop System), .

DTC Description Confirmed DTC Pending DTC Freeze Frame
P0010 VTC Oil Control Solenoid Valve Malfunction

DTC (PGM-FI)

  1. Problem verification

-1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 3. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3, 000 rpm without load (in P or N) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.

    - 4. Select the VTC TEST in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS.

    VTC TEST

Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.

DTC Description Confirmed DTC Pending DTC Freeze Frame
P0010 VTC Oil Control Solenoid Valve Malfunction

    Is DTC P0010 indicated?

    YES

The failure is duplicated. Go to step 2.

    NO

Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the VTC oil control solenoid valve and the PCM. If the freeze data/on-board snapshot of this DTC is recorded, try to reproduce the failure under the same conditions with the freeze data/on-board snapshot.

  2. VTC oil control solenoid valve internal resistance check

-1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

VTC oil control solenoid valve 2P connector

    - 3. At the VTC oil control solenoid valve side, measure the resistance between test points 1 and 2.

Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
VTC oil control solenoid valve 2P connector: disconnected
Test point 1 VTC oil control solenoid valve 2P connector No. 1 (VTC oil control solenoid valve side)
Test point 2 VTC oil control solenoid valve 2P connector No. 2 (VTC oil control solenoid valve side)

    Is there 6.75 - 8.25 Ω at room temperature?

    YES

    Go to step 3.

    NO

Replace the VTC oil control solenoid valve .

  3. Open wire check (PG line)

-1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
VTC oil control solenoid valve 2P connector: disconnected
Test point 1 VTC oil control solenoid valve 2P connector No. 2
    Test point 2 Body ground
    GHH198216Courtesy of HONDA, U.S.A., INC.

    Is there continuity?

    YES

The PG line is OK. Go to step 4.

    NO

Repair an open in the PG wire between the VTC oil control solenoid valve and G101.

  4. Shorted wire check (VTC line)

-1. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

    PCM connector C (51P)

    - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
VTC oil control solenoid valve 2P connector: disconnected
      PCM connector C (51P): disconnected
Test point 1 VTC oil control solenoid valve 2P connector No. 1
    Test point 2 Body ground
    GHH198217Courtesy of HONDA, U.S.A., INC.

    Is there continuity?

    YES

Repair a short in the VTC wire between the PCM (C26) and the VTC oil control solenoid valve.

    NO

The VTC wire is not shorted. Go to step 5.

  5. Open wire check (VTC line)

-1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
VTC oil control solenoid valve 2P connector: disconnected
      PCM connector C (51P): disconnected
Test point 1 VTC oil control solenoid valve 2P connector No. 1
Test point 2 PCM connector C (51P) No. 26 - Refer to: PCM Connector for Inputs and Outputs (L4) (2015-17) or PCM Connector for Inputs and Outputs (L4) (2018-19),
    GHH198218Courtesy of HONDA, U.S.A., INC.

    Is there continuity?

    YES

The VTC wire is OK. Update the PCM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good PCM - Refer to: PCM Removal and Installation (With SH-AWD), or PCM Removal and Installation (Without SH-AWD) , then recheck. If DTC P0010 goes away and the PCM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If DTC P0010 goes away and the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM - Refer to: PCM Removal and Installation (With SH-AWD), or PCM Removal and Installation (Without SH-AWD) .

    NO

Repair an open in the VTC wire between the VTC oil control solenoid valve and the PCM (C26).
