Connecting Rod Bearing Replacement: Replacement
- Cylinder Head - Remove
1. Remove the cylinder head . - Oil Pump - Remove
1. Remove the oil pump . - Bearing Cap Bridge and Bearing Cap - Remove
1. Remove the bearing cap bridge bolts. To prevent warpage, loosen the bolts in sequence 1/3 turn at a time; repeat the sequence until all bolts are loosened 2. Remove the bearing cap bridge and the bearing caps.
- Connecting Rod Cap Bridge/bearing Half - Remove
1. Remove the connecting rod caps (A) and the connecting rod bearing halves (B). Keep all connecting rod caps bridge/bearing halves in order. - Connecting Rod Bearing Clearance - Inspect
1. Clean the connecting rod journal and the connecting rod bearing half with a clean shop towel 2. Place one strip of plastigage across the rod journal
3. Reinstall the connecting rod bearing half and the connecting rod cap, and torque the bolts to 10 N.m (1.0 kgf.m, 7 lbf.ft) + 90 °.
NOTE:- Apply new engine oil to the bolt threads and flanges.
- Do not rotate the crankshaft during inspection.
4. Remove the connecting rod cap and the connecting rod bearing half, and measure the widest part of the plastigage.
Standard (New): 0.020-0.038 mm (0.00079-0.00150 in) Service Limit: 0.050 mm (0.00197 in) 5. If the plastigage measures too wide or too narrow, remove the upper half of the connecting rod bearing. Install a new, complete connecting rod bearing with the same color code, and recheck the clearance. Do not file, shim, or scrape the connecting rod bearings or the connecting rod caps to adjust clearance.
6. If the plastigage shows the clearance is still incorrect, try the next larger or smaller connecting rod bearing (the color listed above or below that one), and check the clearance again. If the proper clearance cannot be obtained by using the appropriate larger or smaller connecting rod bearing, replace the crankshaft and start over.
- Connecting Rod Bearing - Select
Connecting Rod Big End Bore Code Locations 1. Inspect each connecting rod for cracks and heat damage
2. Each connecting rod falls into one of four tolerance ranges (from 0 to 0.024 mm (0.00095 in), in 0.006 mm (0.00024 in) increments) depending on the size of its big end bore. It's then stamped with a number (1, 2, 3, or 4) indicating the range. You may find any combination of 1, 2, 3, or 4 in any engine. If the codes are indecipherable because of an accumulation of dirt and dust, do not scrub them with a wire brush or scraper. Clean them only with solvent or detergent.
Big End Bore Size: 43.0 mm (1.693 in) Connecting Rod Journal Code Location 3. The connecting rod journal codes are stamped on the crankshaft.
4. Use the big end bore codes and rod journal codes to select the appropriate replacement bearings from the following table. NOTE:- Color code is on the edge of the bearing.
- When using bearing halves of different colors, it does not matter which color is used in the top or bottom.
- Connecting Rod Bolt - Inspect
1. Inspect the connecting rod bolts . - Connecting Rod Cap/Bearing Half - Install
1. Install the bearing halves (A) in the connecting rods 2. Apply new engine oil to the threads and flange of the connecting rod bolts
3. Seat the connecting rod journals into connecting rod No. 1 and connecting rod No. 4. Line up the mark (B) on the connecting rod and the connecting rod cap (C), then install the connecting rod caps and the connecting rod bolts finger-tight
4. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise, and seat the connecting rod journals into connecting rod No. 2 and connecting rod No. 3. Line up the mark on the connecting rod and the connecting rod cap, then install the connecting rod caps and the connecting rod bolts finger-tight.
5. Torque the connecting rod bolts to 10 N.m (1.0 kgf.m, 7 lbf.ft).
6. Tighten the connecting rod bolts an additional 90 °.NOTE: Remove the connecting rod bolt if you tightened it beyond the specified angle, do the connecting rod bolt inspection procedure . Do not loosen it back to the specified angle. - Bearing Cap Bridge and Bearing Cap - Install
1. Install the bearing caps and the bearing cap bridge . - Oil Pump - Install
1. Install the oil pump . - Cylinder Head - Install
1. Install the cylinder head .
