DTC 27: Steering Angle Sensor Malfunction (With SH-AWD)

NOTE: Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data and any on-board snapshot, and review the general troubleshooting information (see GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION  ).
  1. Check the size, air pressure, and the amount of wear of all four tires, and check the wheel alignment (see WHEEL ALIGNMENT ).

Is the tire condition and wheel alignment OK?

YES  - Go to step 2.

NO  - Make sure the suspension is not modified, and adjust the wheel alignment, and recheck by test-driving.

  2. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), or press the engine start/stop button to select the ON mode.
  3. Slowly drive the vehicle straight ahead without turning the steering wheel for 10 ft (3 m) or more, then park the vehicle while holding the steering wheel in the straight ahead position.
  4. Check the STEERING ANGLE in the VSA DATA LIST with the HDS.

    Is it 0°±3°?

YES  - Go to step  6.

NO  - Go to step 5.

  5. Do the VSA sensor neutral position memorization (see VSA SENSOR NEUTRAL POSITION MEMORIZATION  ).
  6. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
  7. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), or press the engine start/stop button to select the OFF mode.
  8. Test-drive the vehicle around a number of corners.
NOTE: Drive the vehicle on the road, not on a lift.
  9. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC 27 indicated?

YES  - Go to step 10.

    NO  - Troubleshooting is complete.

  10. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), or press the engine start/stop button to select the OFF mode.
  11. Disconnect the steering angle sensor 5P connector (see STEERING ANGLE SENSOR REPLACEMENT  ).
  12. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), or press the engine start/stop button to select the ON mode.
  13. Measure the voltage between the steering angle sensor 5P connector terminal No. 5 and body ground.

    Is there battery voltage?

YES  - Go to step 14.

NO  - Repair an open in the wire between the No. 6 (7.5 A) fuse in the driver's under-dash fuse/relay box and the steering angle sensor.

  14. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), or press the engine start/stop button to select the OFF mode.
  15. Check for continuity between the steering angle sensor 5P connector terminal No. 1 and body ground.

    Is there continuity?

YES  - Go to step 16.

NO  - Repair an open in the wire between the steering angle sensor and body ground (G401).

  16. Disconnect the VSA modulator-control unit 47P connector (see step  5).
  17. Check for continuity between VSA modulator-control unit 47P connector terminals No. 12, No 13 and steering angle sensor 5P connector terminals No. 4, No. 2 individually.

    Is there continuity?

YES  - Go to step 18.

NO  - Repair an open in the wire between the VSA modulator-control unit and the steering angle sensor.

  18. Substitute a known-good steering angle sensor (see STEERING ANGLE SENSOR REPLACEMENT  ).
  19. Reconnect all connectors.
  20. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), or press the engine start/stop button to select the ON mode.
  21. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
  22. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), or press the engine start/stop button to select the OFF mode.
  23. Test-drive the vehicle around a number of corners.
NOTE: Drive the vehicle on the road, not on a lift.
  24. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC 27 indicated?

YES  - Go to step 25.

NO  - Replace the original steering angle sensor (see STEERING ANGLE SENSOR REPLACEMENT  ).

  25. Update the VSA modulator-control unit if it does not have the latest software (see VSA MODULATOR-CONTROL UNIT UPDATE  ).
  26. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), or press the engine start/stop button to select the OFF mode.
  27. Test-drive the vehicle around a number of corners.
NOTE: Drive the vehicle on the road, not on a lift.
  28. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC 27 indicated?

YES  - Check for loose terminals in the VSA modulator-control unit 47P connector. If the VSA modulator-control unit was updated and the symptom/indication is still present, replace the VSA modulator-control unit (see VSA MODULATOR-CONTROL UNIT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  ).

NO  - If the VSA modulator-control unit was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If any other DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTCS TROUBLESHOOTING .
