Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor

  1. Check Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL). If light comes on, see appropriate ENGINE PERFORMANCE article. If light does not come on, turn ignition off. Remove stereo unit and disconnect climate control unit 20-pin harness connector. Disconnect engine coolant temperature sensor 2-pin harness connector. Measure voltage between ground and Red/White wire terminal of 20-pin harness connector. See Figure .
  2. If about 5 volts does not exist, repair open Red/White wire between climate control unit 20-pin harness connector and engine coolant temperature sensor. If about 5 volts exists, check for loose wires or poor connections at climate control unit 20-pin harness connector and engine coolant temperature sensor.
  3. If connections are okay, substitute known-good climate control unit and recheck. See CLIMATE CONTROL UNIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If symptom does not exist after substituting known-good climate control unit, replace original climate control unit.
