Codes 45 & 46 - Fuel Metering System

  1. Turn ignition off. Remove ACG fuse (No. 15, 7.5-amp) from underdash fuse box for 10 seconds to reset ECM. Start engine, and allow cooling fan to come on. Road-test using following procedure:
    • With transaxle in D (A/T) or 3rd gear (M/T), cruise at exactly 35 MPH for 10 seconds.
    • Release throttle. Allow vehicle to decelerate to less than 30 MPH.
    • Accelerate to exactly 35 MPH, then cruise for 10 seconds.
    • Repeat procedure 10 times.
    • Stop vehicle. Turn ignition off.
    • Start vehicle. Repeat acceleration/deceleration procedure 5 times.
  2. Retrieve codes. If Code 45 or 46 does not appear, problem is intermittent and cannot be duplicated at this time.
  3. If Code 45 or 46 exists, turn ignition off. Measure fuel pressure. See BASIC TESTING article. Repair if necessary. If fuel pressure is okay, temporarily install known good MAP sensor. Repeat step 1) and again retrieve codes. If Code 45 or Code 46 appears, go to next step. If Code 45 or 46 does not appear, replace original MAP sensor.
  4. If Code 45 exists, install known good injectors on left side of engine. If Code 46 exists, install known good injectors on right side of engine. If both Code 45 and 46 exist, install known good injectors on both sides of engine.
  5. Repeat step 1), then retrieve codes. If Codes 45 or 46 do not appear, replace original fuel injectors. If Code 45 or 46 appears, inspect fuel line between fuel injectors and fuel filter. If restriction exists, replace or repair as necessary. If no restriction exists, temporarily substitute known good ECM, then retest system.
